NAFC | The Greatest Champion: A Deep Dive

By Dale Walters & Adam Ireland

The NAFC (North American Football Conference), formerly known as the Yuma Scorpions Fantasy Football League (2009-2018), is a fantasy football league like no other. From unique team names and a distinctive commissioner to the wild antics that characterize the league, the NAFC stands out as a premier fantasy football experience.

The 2023 season marked the 10th season of official record-keeping on ESPN. While the first five seasons (2009-2013) were also played on ESPN, detailed records from those early years are sparse. However, starting in 2014, the NAFC established meticulous record-keeping for all statistics. With a decade’s worth of data from 2014 to 2023, NAFC+ has undertaken the task of answering a long-debated question: which champion from these ten seasons is the greatest of them all? Many believe the 2015 California Rebels, led by the dynamic wide receiver duo of Antonio Brown and Julio Jones, hold this title. However, this belief might be clouded by nostalgia and bias. To definitively answer this question and to pass the time during the offseason leading up to the 2024 NAFC Draft, NAFC+ has conducted a thorough analysis to determine the greatest champion from the past decade.

The Methodology

To answer this, we delved deep into a treasure trove of data, meticulously analyzing past champions from 2014 to 2023, using a robust metric system to determine the ultimate ranking.

To ensure fairness and accuracy in our ranking, we developed a comprehensive “Champions Score” out of 100. This score was derived from various critical data points, each weighted according to its perceived importance in determining a champion’s greatness. Here’s the hierarchy we used to assign weights:

1. Average Margin of Victory in Playoffs (20%)
2. Fantasy Players in Top 25 (15%)
3. Points For (10%)
4. Points Against (8%)
5. Points Per Game (10%)
6. Points Against Per Game (8%)
7. Points For Per Playoff Game (10%)
8. Points Against Per Playoff Game (8%)
9. League Size (5%)
10. Playoff Seed (4%)
11. Regular Season Record (2%)
Hierarchy

Step 2: Normalize the Data Points

To ensure comparability, we needed to normalize each data point to a common scale (e.g., 0 to 100). Each of these metrics was normalized to ensure comparability across different seasons and then combined to create the final Champion Score.

Step 3: Calculate the Normalized Scores

Use min-max normalization for continuous variables. For categorical variables like Fantasy Players in Top 25, League Size, Playoff Seed, and Regular Season Record, we can normalize based on predefined ranges.

Step 4: Compute the Champions Score

Combine the normalized scores using the assigned weights to get the final “Champions Score”.

We created a generalized formula to compute our “Champions Score.” Here’s the generalized formula:

\[ \text{Champion Score} = \sum_{i=1}^{11} (\text{Normalized Value}_i \times \text{Weight}_i) \]

Data Normalization and Calculation

We’ll normalize each data point for the given years (2014-2023) and compute the scores.

Here is the breakdown of the normalization process and calculation for each year:

1. Normalize each metric (scaling between 0-100):
   – For continuous variables (Points For, Points Against, etc.):
     \[
     \text{Normalized Value} = \frac{\text{Actual Value} – \text{Min Value}}{\text{Max Value} – \text{Min Value}} \times 100
     \]
   – For categorical variables (League Size, Playoff Seed, etc.): scale linearly or by rank.
2. Weighted Sum:
   – Apply the weights to the normalized values.
Example Calculation for 2014 California Rebels Champion Score
We’ll first need to define the min and max for each metric across all years.
Step 1: Calculate Normalized Values for 2014
– Average Margin of Victory in Playoffs:
  – Actual: 22.6
  – Min: 7.23 (2022)
  – Max: 53.6 (2015)
  \[
  \text{Normalized Value} = \frac{22.6 – 7.23}{53.6 – 7.23} \times 100 = 36.36
  \]
– Fantasy Players in Top 25:
  – Actual: 3
  – Min: 2 (2022)
  – Max: 5 (Multiple years)
  \[
  \text{Normalized Value} = \frac{3 – 2}{5 – 2} \times 100 = 33.33
  \]
Repeat similar calculations for other metrics.
Step 2: Apply Weights and Calculate Score for 2014
\[
\text{Champion Score} = (36.36 \times 0.2) + (33.33 \times 0.15) + \ldots + (\text{Normalized Regular Season Record} \times 0.02)
\]
Full Calculation
Breakdown of the Normalization Process

To compute the score for each year and then provide a ranking, we repeated the same steps for all years and then added the weighted normalized values.

Yuma Bowl MVP: Julio Jones (28 Points)- Rebels

The 2019 California Rebels were on a mission to reclaim their former glory and silence the doubters after a tumultuous 2018 season. With the motto “The Rebellion Reborn,” the team set their sights on winning their third championship under Coach Nevers, and their journey was nothing short of spectacular.

Draft and Regular Season Performance

The Rebels’ quest began on draft night with a bold in-draft trade with the Seattle Leathernecks. They swapped DeAndre Hopkins for Julio Jones and exchanged WRs D.J. Moore and Chris Godwin, setting a solid foundation. Adding rookie RB Josh Jacobs and TE Travis Kelce, the Rebels built a formidable team quarterbacked by Matt Ryan.

Despite a season-opening loss to Los Angeles, the Rebels quickly found their stride, embarking on a seven-game win streak. Midseason, recognizing a need for a strong RB, they traded with Montana for RB Chris Carson, solidifying their roster. The Rebels finished the regular season with an 8-5 record, securing the fifth seed in the playoffs.

Playoff Brilliance

In preparation for the playoffs, the Rebels made strategic acquisitions, including RB Mark Ingram, QB Jameis Winston, and WR T.Y. Hilton. These moves paid off immediately. Coach Nevers made a bold decision to start Winston over Ryan in the first-round matchup against Las Vegas, a decision vindicated by Winston’s stellar performance, throwing for 456 yards and four TDs in a commanding 161-93 victory.

The second-round matchup saw the Rebels face the defending champion Seattle Leathernecks. In a game that lived up to the hype, the Rebels delivered a stunning 191-point performance, propelled by Winston’s four TDs and a strong showing by Godwin, clinching a 191-162 win.

Yuma Bowl XI

In Yuma Bowl XI, the Rebels faced the Montana Wombats, a first-season team that had advanced through a tiebreaker. 5. 2021 Seattle Leathernecks

Yuma Bowl XII: Seattle Leathernecks 123.6 Ottawa Bears 111.0

Yuma Bowl MVP: Dak Prescott (28.0 Points)- Leathernecks

The 2021 Seattle Leathernecks entered the season with high expectations. Building on the momentum from a strategic trade with the Las Vegas Razorbacks in 2020, they aimed to secure their second title after two consecutive semifinal exits. The Leathernecks’ determination and strategic maneuvers throughout the season culminated in a spectacular championship run, proving their resilience and skill.

Draft and Regular Season Performance

Holding the 7th and 12th picks in the first round, Seattle kicked off their draft by selecting top-tier WRs Tyreek Hill and Davante Adams. They followed up with RBs Antonio Gibson and David Montgomery, then added QBs Justin Herbert and Dak Prescott, assembling a formidable roster poised for dominance.

However, the season began in a rocky fashion. Starting 1-2, the Leathernecks briefly recovered with two wins before enduring a three-game losing streak, standing at 3-5 by Week 8. With their season hanging in the balance, GM George Michaels and Owner Nathan Simmons took a bold approach, gutting and rebuilding their roster mid-season.

Key Trades and Turnaround

Two pivotal trades reshaped the Leathernecks’ season. The first involved swapping WR Davante Adams for WR Tee Higgins and a future draft pick with the California Rebels. The second saw WR Tyreek Hill and RB David Montgomery traded for RB Jonathan Taylor and WR Mike Williams, along with future draft compensation. These trades transformed the team’s dynamics, centering their offense around the powerful legs of Jonathan Taylor.

Taylor’s arrival marked a turning point, as he emerged as the RB1 and overall #1 fantasy player, driving Seattle to win five of their last six regular-season games. The Leathernecks, now a force to be reckoned with, entered the playoffs with renewed vigor.

Playoff Dominance

In the playoffs, the Leathernecks first cruised past the Las Vegas Razorbacks with a decisive 117.9-78.9 victory, marking Las Vegas’ final playoff appearance. In the semifinals, they faced a high-scoring Commandos team. Despite a strong performance by WR Jalen Waddle for the Commandos, Seattle edged out a thrilling 146.9-138.3 win.

Returning to the Yuma Bowl for the first time since 2018, the Leathernecks faced the Ottawa Bears, who were on their own magical playoff run. Led by Dak Prescott, Seattle secured their second Yuma Bowl title with a 123.6-111.0 victory.

Yuma Bowl MVP: Kirk Cousins (34.6 Points)- Rebels

The California Rebels, fresh off their 2014 championship triumph, entered the 2015 season with a singular mission: to defend their title and solidify their legacy. Adopting the rallying cry “United Under One,” the Rebels embarked on a journey that would see them not only meet expectations but exceed them, capturing their second consecutive Yuma Scorpion Championship in spectacular fashion.

Draft and Regular Season Performance

Preparation for the title defense began well before the draft. Dan Thompson and his scouting team identified Julio Jones as a must-have, engineering a trade with Carson City to ensure his selection. This strategic move allowed the Rebels to secure Jones in the second round after an unexpected development left Antonio Brown available at their first pick. Pairing Brown with Jones, the Rebels assembled one of the most formidable WR duos in NAFC history.

This dynamic duo propelled the Rebels to an 8-5 regular-season record, earning them the 4th seed in the playoffs. The Rebels’ potent offense, complemented by a sturdy defense, laid the foundation for a deep postseason run.

Playoff Dominance

In the first round, the Rebels faced their arch-rivals, the Iowa Rebel Killers, for the third straight season. In a nail-biting contest, the Rebels’ defense came through with a last-second stop, clinching a 128-123 victory.

The semifinals saw the Rebels clash with the upstart Seattle Leathernecks, who had just upset the top-seeded Detroit Titans. With a roster featuring Blake Bortles, Todd Gurley, Odell Beckham Jr., Allen Robinson, and Gary Barnidge, Seattle posed a formidable challenge. However, the Rebels responded with a historic performance, scoring a league-record 251 points to Seattle’s 141. Drew Brees contributed 30 points, David Johnson added 45, Antonio Brown scored 50, and Julio Jones chipped in with 30, delivering the perfect fantasy week and securing a 110-point win.

Yuma Bowl VII pitted the Rebels against the #3 seeded Netsch. Building on their semifinal momentum, the Rebels amassed 176 points, led by QB Kirk Cousins and TE Jordan Reed. 3. 2023 California Rebels

Yuma Bowl XV: California Rebels 163.5 Moscow Black Bears 117.6

Yuma Bowl MVP: Kyren Williams (34.1 Points)- Rebels

The 2023 season was set to be a challenging one for the California Rebels. After an all-in push for their fourth title in 2022, which saw them trade away multiple high-draft picks, many doubted their ability to compete. The Rebels entered the draft without picks in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, or 6th rounds, a daunting scenario for any team. However, the brain trust of Hunter Schaal, Matthew Nevers, and Dan Thompson had faith in their system and strategy.

Draft Strategy and Key Acquisitions

Given their lack of early picks, the Rebels adopted a bold strategy. They traded up in the 3rd round to select QB Josh Allen, aiming to offset potential weaknesses in other positions. The rest of the draft saw the Rebels focus on acquiring running backs, employing a Zero-RB strategy to maximize value from later picks. By the 12th and 13th rounds, they had added RB Raheem Mostert and RB Kyren Williams, both of whom would become critical to their success.

Entering the season, expectations were low. Owner Hunter Schaal admitted that avoiding the worst record in NAFC history was the initial goal, with an internal target of just four wins. However, the team quickly exceeded those modest expectations.

Regular Season Surprises

A surprising Week 1 victory over the Atlantic City Aces hinted at the potential within the squad. Recognizing a gap at wide receiver, GM Dan Thompson made bold moves, acquiring rookie phenom Puka Nacua from the waiver wire and veteran WR Chris Godwin through a trade with Albuquerque. The trade also brought in rookie TE Sam LaPorta, who would go on to become the season’s top tight end.

The Rebels stunned the league with a 6-0 start, showcasing the effectiveness of their roster and the brilliance of their in-season acquisitions. The strong start shifted their sights from mere respectability to a potential championship run.

Playoff Prowess

In the playoffs, the Rebels faced the Montana Wombats in the first round. Despite Montana’s aggressive trade deadline moves, coaching errors by Barry Smawock allowed the Rebels to secure a 144.3-132.1 victory. The semifinal against the Burlington Boss Hogs was a nail-biter, ending with a crucial interception by Keele Ringo on the game’s final play that sealed a 141.8-140.7 win and secured a berth in Yuma Bowl XV.

In the championship game, Coach Matthew Nevers outmaneuvered Moscow’s Rick Vice, leading the Rebels to a dominant 163.5-117.6 victory. The triumph marked Nevers’ fifth title and the Rebels’ second consecutive championship, cementing their status as a dynasty.

2. 2018 Seattle Leathernecks

Yuma Bowl X: Seattle Leathernecks 201 Los Alamos Atomic Thunder 140

Yuma Bowl MVP: Antonio Brown (45 Points)- Leathernecks

The 2018 Seattle Leathernecks entered the season with a burning desire to claim their first title. Frustrated by previous near-misses, the Leathernecks, managed by Nathan Simmons and Ben Pauli, were determined to break through after a shocking first-round playoff exit in 2017. Their offseason strategy and draft decisions set the stage for a historic run.

Draft and Roster Moves

The Leathernecks’ draft was pivotal. They secured WR Antonio Brown with the 5th overall pick and WR Michael Thomas with the 16th overall pick, forming a potent receiving duo. Veteran QB Drew Brees, a two-time Yuma Bowl champion, was added in the 7th round, while second-year TE George Kittle was a steal in the 13th round. Midseason, they bolstered their backfield by trading with the Las Vegas Razorbacks for RB James Conner.

Regular Season Dominance

The Leathernecks started the season strong, posting a 5-2 record, the best start in franchise history. Their high-powered offense, led by Brown and Thomas, kept pace with the Miami Gamecocks and Los Alamos Atomic Thunder in the race for the highest-scoring team ever. The Leathernecks finished the regular season with a franchise-best 9-4 record, amassing 1,874 points, which was the third-best at the time and seventh-best all-time as of 2024.

Playoff Success

The Leathernecks entered the playoffs with momentum and a first-round bye. In the semifinals, a crucial waiver-wire addition of Damien Williams paid off, as his performance propelled Seattle to a hard-fought 107-99 victory over the Miami Gamecocks. This set the stage for Yuma Bowl X against the top-seeded Los Alamos Atomic Thunder.

In the championship game, the Leathernecks’ offensive firepower was on full display. WR Antonio Brown delivered a masterful performance, scoring 45 points and earning Yuma Bowl MVP honors. Seattle’s relentless attack overwhelmed Los Alamos, securing a decisive 201-140 victory and the franchise’s first Yuma Bowl title.

1. 2016 Cincinnati Harambe

Yuma Bowl VIII: Cincinnati Harambe 199 Seattle Leathernecks 147

Yuma Bowl MVP: Jordy Nelson (36.4 Points)- Harambe

The 2016 Cincinnati Harambe were a team born out of necessity. The league had taken a hit with the departure of four teams, including the Cuban Reds and the Oregon Express, who formed a new league. To keep the competition alive, Scott Middlebrook and Reese Snyder were awarded teams, with Snyder dedicating his team to Cincinnati in honor of the fallen silverback gorilla, Harambe.

Draft and Roster Moves

The Harambe’s journey to Yuma Bowl VIII began with a bold draft strategy. Selecting rookie RB Ezekiel Elliott in the first round was a league shocker, making him the first rookie ever to be picked in the first round. This surprise move paid off tremendously. Complementing Elliott, Cincinnati drafted WR Jordy Nelson in the second round, WR Amari Cooper in the third, TE Travis Kelce in the fifth, and QB Andrew Luck in the sixth. By adding RB LeGarrette Blount in the twelfth round, the Harambe had assembled a powerful lineup.

Playoff Success

Cincinnati started the season trading wins and losses before rallying for four consecutive victories. They finished with an 8-5 record, securing the fourth seed in the Yuma Scorpion Playoffs. In the first round, they faced the 2015 Commissioner Trophy winners, the Detroit Titans. The Harambe dominated, winning 124-83.

The semifinals pitted them against the top-seeded California Rebels, the reigning back-to-back champions. Despite the Rebels’ formidable reputation, they were weakened by injuries and poor trades. The Harambe capitalized, storming into Los Angeles and securing a decisive 143-85 victory, paving their way to Yuma Bowl VIII.

In the final showdown, the Harambe faced the sixth-seeded Seattle Leathernecks. Cincinnati continued their playoff dominance, led by an MVP performance from WR Jordy Nelson, and triumphed 199-147, securing their championship.

Honorable Mention: 2013 Iowa Rebel Killers

Yuma Bowl V: Iowa Rebel Killers Defeated GMEN (Score Not recorded)

Yuma Bowl MVP: Le’Veon Bell (20 Points)- Killers

The 2013 Iowa Rebel Killers earn an honorable mention on this list due to limited available data on this championship team. As the first team to win a title under the Commissonership of Hunter Schaal, the Iowa Rebel Killers boasted an impressive lineup, characterized by strength and dominance. The Killers drafted key players such as QB Ben Roethlisberger, RB Jamaal Charles, WR Antonio Brown, TE Jimmy Graham, and rookie phenom Le’Veon Bell.

The Iowa Rebel Killers were introduced to the Yuma Scorpions league after Addison Ross spent the 2012 Fantasy Season listening to Hunter Schaal discuss fantasy football and his beloved California Rebels. With an opening available, Ross joined the league, naming his team the Iowa Rebel Killers as a playful mockery of the California Rebels.

From the outset, the Rebels and Rebel Killers were linked as rivals. The 2013 squad secured the 5th seed in the Yuma Scorpions Playoffs, finishing the regular season with a 7-6 record. Initially, Yuma Scorpion Media paid little attention to the Iowa team, not expecting much from the newcomers. This all changed in the semifinals. After defeating USMC in the first round, the Killers faced the top-seeded and championship favorite California Rebels, setting the stage for a highly anticipated playoff matchup.

The final score of Iowa Rebel Killers 159, California Rebels 119, was fueled by an all-time historic performance by Killer’s RB Jamaal Charles. Charles single-handedly propelled the Killers to the championship with his 59.5 fantasy point game, amassing 8 rushes for 20 yards, 8 receptions for 195 yards, and 5 touchdowns.
