A division rivalry was reignited to kick off the 2024 NAFC season as the Moscow Black Bears triumphed over the newly rebranded Seattle Heist, 135.4-96.6. The Heist, formerly known as the Leathernecks, entered Moscow, Idaho, with hopes of starting the “Heist” era on a strong note. However, Moscow, who famously handed the Leathernecks their final loss under their old nickname, once again proved to be their nemesis in a commanding victory.

The matchup got underway on Thursday night when Moscow’s running back, Isiah Pacheco, found the endzone and racked up 17 fantasy points. This early strike put the Black Bears ahead, and they never looked back.

Seattle’s hopes were pinned on their three-headed running back committee, featuring James Cook, Alvin Kamara, and Jahmyr Gibbs. All three backs had solid performances, each surpassing 15 points and providing the Heist with some much-needed production. Unfortunately for Seattle, that was where the good news ended.

The biggest disappointment for the Heist was the lackluster performance from quarterback Kirk Cousins. Returning to the field after recovering from Achilles surgery, Cousins struggled to find his rhythm, managing only 7.5 fantasy points in an underwhelming performance. To make matters worse, star wide receiver DK Metcalf had a quiet game, delivering just 5.9 points, leaving the Heist without the firepower needed to keep pace with Moscow.

Breece Hall celebrates his first touchdown of the season.

On the flip side, the Black Bears looked dangerous across the board. Rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud played well beyond his years, posting an impressive 21.3 points, while Breece Hall, Moscow’s first overall pick, found the endzone, further solidifying the team’s offensive dominance. Although Moscow’s performance wasn’t flawless, they looked poised for a strong 2024 campaign, with their air attack showing promise.

With the victory, Moscow appears to be in playoff form already, ready to make a deep run this season. Meanwhile, Seattle will need to regroup quickly. General Manager George Michaels will surely be looking for ways to revitalize the team after a rough debut for the Heist.

Seattle will travel to Burlington, Vermont, in Week 2 to face the 1-0 Boss Hogs, while the Black Bears will stay in Moscow for another home game, this time welcoming the 0-1 Austin Oilers. As the season unfolds, the Heist will look for answers, while Moscow is set on proving that they are a force to be reckoned with in the NAFC this year.
