Chris Godwin Returns to the Rebels

In a surprising move that shook up the NAFC landscape, the California Rebels and Albuquerque Roadrunners completed a trade on Wednesday, September 20th, sending wide receiver Chris Godwin to Los Angeles and running back Javonte Williams to the Roadrunners. This trade also included a swap of tight ends, with Cole Kmet heading to Albuquerque and rookie Sam LaPorta joining the Rebels.

The Roadrunners, plagued by injuries to key running backs Saquon Barkley and Jamaal Williams in Week 2, identified their need for a reliable rusher. Javonte Williams, known for his versatility and power running, is expected to fill this void for Albuquerque.

On the flip side, the Rebels recognized the opportunity to bolster their receiving corps by acquiring Chris Godwin. This trade marks the fourth time in the last five years that Godwin has been united with Coach Matthew Nevers and the Rebels organization. Their familiarity and chemistry on the field make this acquisition a significant one for the Rebels.

Rebels General Manager Dan Thompson expressed his thoughts on the trade, saying, “We have been really blessed early in the year with some solid running back depth. We felt we could move one of our guys and add to a thin, yet improving wide receiver room. Chris is a solid locker room guy and a player who knows our offense and strategy. He will step right into the lineup, where we hope he can make an immediate impact. We are happy to have Godwin back in LA, where he belongs.”

This trade highlights the strategic thinking of both teams, addressing specific needs and aiming for immediate results. It’s worth noting that this is the second trade between these two franchises, showcasing the familiar ties that exist between Coach Matthew Nevers in Los Angeles and Coach/GM Ryan Nevers in Albuquerque. Both teams are eager to see how these roster changes will shape their fortunes in the upcoming games. The NAFC trade scene is heating up, and football fans can expect more exciting developments as the season unfolds.
