The NAFC (North American Football Conference), formerly known as the Yuma Scorpions Fantasy Football League (2009-2018), is a fantasy football league like no other. From unique team names and a distinctive commissioner to the wild antics that characterize the league, the NAFC stands out as a premier fantasy football experience.
The 2023 season marked the 10th season of official record-keeping on ESPN. While the first five seasons (2009-2013) were also played on ESPN, detailed records from those early years are sparse. However, starting in 2014, the NAFC established meticulous record-keeping for all statistics. With a decade’s worth of data from 2014 to 2023, NAFC+ has undertaken the task of answering a long-debated question: which champion from these ten seasons is the greatest of them all? Many believe the 2015 California Rebels, led by the dynamic wide receiver duo of Antonio Brown and Julio Jones, hold this title. However, this belief might be clouded by nostalgia and bias. To definitively answer this question and to pass the time during the offseason leading up to the 2024 NAFC Draft, NAFC+ has conducted a thorough analysis to determine the greatest champion from the past decade.
The Methodology
To answer this, we delved deep into a treasure trove of data, meticulously analyzing past champions from 2014 to 2023, using a robust metric system to determine the ultimate ranking.
To ensure fairness and accuracy in our ranking, we developed a comprehensive “Champions Score” out of 100. This score was derived from various critical data points, each weighted according to its perceived importance in determining a champion’s greatness. Here’s the hierarchy we used to assign weights:

Step 2: Normalize the Data Points
To ensure comparability, we needed to normalize each data point to a common scale (e.g., 0 to 100). Each of these metrics was normalized to ensure comparability across different seasons and then combined to create the final Champion Score.
Step 3: Calculate the Normalized Scores
Use min-max normalization for continuous variables. For categorical variables like Fantasy Players in Top 25, League Size, Playoff Seed, and Regular Season Record, we can normalize based on predefined ranges.
Step 4: Compute the Champions Score
Combine the normalized scores using the assigned weights to get the final “Champions Score”.
We created a generalized formula to compute our “Champions Score.” Here’s the generalized formula:

Data Normalization and Calculation
We’ll normalize each data point for the given years (2014-2023) and compute the scores.
Here is the breakdown of the normalization process and calculation for each year:

Draft and Regular Season Performance
Holding the 7th and 12th picks in the first round, Seattle kicked off their draft by selecting top-tier WRs Tyreek Hill and Davante Adams. They followed up with RBs Antonio Gibson and David Montgomery, then added QBs Justin Herbert and Dak Prescott, assembling a formidable roster poised for dominance.
However, the season began in a rocky fashion. Starting 1-2, the Leathernecks briefly recovered with two wins before enduring a three-game losing streak, standing at 3-5 by Week 8. Adopting the rallying cry “United Under One,” the Rebels embarked on a journey that would see them not only meet expectations but exceed them, capturing their second consecutive Yuma Scorpion Championship in spectacular fashion.
Draft and Regular Season Performance
Preparation for the title defense began well before the draft. Dan Thompson and his scouting team identified Julio Jones as a must-have, engineering a trade with Carson City to ensure his selection. This strategic move allowed the Rebels to secure Jones in the second round after an unexpected development left Antonio Brown available at their first pick. Pairing Brown with Jones, the Rebels assembled one of the most formidable WR duos in NAFC history.
This dynamic duo propelled the Rebels to an 8-5 regular-season record, earning them the 4th seed in the playoffs. The Rebels’ potent offense, complemented by a sturdy defense, laid the foundation for a deep postseason run.
Playoff Dominance
In the first round, the Rebels faced their arch-rivals, the Iowa Rebel Killers, for the third straight season. In a nail-biting contest, the Rebels’ defense came through with a last-second stop, clinching a 128-123 victory.
The semifinals saw the Rebels clash with the upstart Seattle Leathernecks, who had just upset the top-seeded Detroit Titans. With a roster featuring Blake Bortles, Todd Gurley, Odell Beckham Jr., Allen Robinson, and Gary Barnidge, Seattle posed a formidable challenge. However, the Rebels responded with a historic performance, scoring a league-record 251 points to Seattle’s 141.
