Wombats Get On Track
Written by Jeff Plankington
In a thrilling Week 2 showdown, the reigning Yuma Bowl Champion California Rebels (1-1) took a surprising loss as they traveled to face the Montana Wombats (1-1). The Wombats, who came into the game ranked last in the power rankings after a tough Week 1 performance, were determined to prove their doubters wrong in their home opener.
Tyreek Hill Struggles in Opener
The Rebels started Thursday night with star WR Tyreek Hill, but he was held to a mere 6.6 fantasy points, largely due to the Buffalo Bills’ solid defensive game plan and an injury to QB Tua Tagovailoa. This slow start opened the door for Montana, who took full advantage.
Wombats’ Rookie Stars Shine
Montana’s rookies took center stage. First-round pick RB Bijan Robinson delivered with 18.2 points, and Rookie WR Marvin Harrison Jr. exploded for 29.0 points, catching two early touchdowns that set the tone for the game. This dynamic duo gave the Wombats the edge they needed to hold off the Rebels and secure a well-deserved victory.
Rebels’ Bright Spots Not Enough
While the Rebels never found their rhythm, there were some individual standouts. WR Chris Godwin led the way with 24.7 points, and RB James Conner added 25.4 points, but it wasn’t enough to mount a comeback. The defending champions dropped their first game of the season, falling 113.9-99.8.
The Wombats look ahead to their next matchup, a divisional battle against the Albuquerque Roadrunners (1-1). The Rebels, on the other hand, will have a chance to rebound in a highly anticipated matchup as they host the Burlington Boss Hogs (1-1)—a rematch of last year’s semifinal.
Next Week’s Key Games:
- California Rebels (1-1) vs. Burlington Boss Hogs (1-1)
- Montana Wombats (1-1) vs. Albuquerque Roadrunners (1-1)
With Week 2 complete, the NAFC is heating up, and these divisional showdowns will shape the path for the rest of the season!
